WaterfallNestled at an altitude of 7,200 feet near Las Vegas, New Mexico on the edge of the Pecos Wilderness, Camp Monakiwa is surrounded by tall pine trees and aspen groves. A winding, scenic road takes you 18 miles into the mountains and to the Camp.

Camp Monakiwa is more than a magnificent place in the mountains. Here you can experience the beauty of the wilderness in a comfortable setting. Monakiwa provides a natural haven for adults, youth, and children alike for shaping their meetings, retreats, seminars, training sessions and other "get away" events.


 

 

 

 

 
 

Monakiwa Facilities

Sleeping

Lodges will acccomodate 170 people in a combination of 11 A-frame cabins (sleep 10 each), 5 wooden teepees (sleep 5 eah), covered wagons (sleep 4 each), 5 cabins with full bath facilities (sleep 5 each) and an additional 2 bath houses.

 
 

Dining

LodgeA 3000 square foot lodge serves as the focal point for all activities. It includes a picturesque fireplace with a spacious area for games, meetings, or other indoor activities. The lodge can easily accommodate dining tables for 170 people. The attached kitchen is properly equipped for serving large groups of people. Preparation of meals and food is the responsibility of the renting group.

Recreation

Camp Monakiwa

  • Archery and rifelry ranges are available for approved groups.
  • Physical capabilities can be tested on a ropes course and a choice of two ziplines.
  • Softball, volleyball, and other field activity areas are provided
  • Large arts & crafts cabin is available
  • Photography darkrooms are available
  • Nature trails for exploring around
  • Horseback trail riding is available (at an additional cost)


Canoes

Nearby Attractions

  • Hiking trails explore the natural beauty of the area. Some favorites include a three hour hike to Marujo Falls, a one hour hike to Inscription Rock, or short hikes up scenic canyon trails.
  • Golfing
  • Trout fishing is available on several streams and lakes within an hour of the camp
  • Four wheel drive trails surround the camp for those avid four wheelers
  • Backpacking trips into the Pecos Wilderness can easily originate from Camp Monakiwa
  • Santa Fe - a visit to the Square, the Indian pueblos, the Santa Fe Opera, Spanish Missions, shopping and more!
  • Taos - Indian pueblos, scenic trails, Spanish missions, shopping and more!

Bring your group for relaxation and fun for a weekend or even a week to the beautiful mountains of New Mexico. This can be your sanctuary from that other world of crowded freeways, piles of paperwork and endless chores.

Camp Monakiwa, owned and operated by the Camp Fire Council of Lubbock, is dedicated to helping people realize their potential and to encourage them to function effectively as caring, self directed individuals. A Monakiwa employee will be available to provide your retreat, conference, training event or camp with whatever support you require for success.
